Due to the outstanding generosity of the Webber Community, particularly in these financially uncertain times, we were faced with a lovely problem regarding our Harvest Festival Donations for the MK Lions Food Cupboard last week.
Over the last several years the bags and boxes of kindly donated tins and dry goods have filled every square inch of the large estate car that the organiser of the MK Food Cupboard arrives in at the same time every year to collect our donations.
However this year when looking at the significantly increased volume of the absolute mountain of food donations piled high on every surface of the Parent Cafe we had to give the organiser a call and ask for him to send a much bigger van!
The children from Nursery to Year 11 had been asking parents to help them shop or raid the store cupboards at home collecting their donations in their Forms classes. For some year groups this was part of their ongoing PSHCE work on Community or their Harvest Festival Assembly celebrations.
Last Monday with the help of Student Executive and the Year 11 students we created a 'human chain' to load up the MK Food Cupboard's transit van and as you can see from the photograph below the crates were stacked high to the door!
These donations will be invaluable and greatly appreciated in fighting the significant food poverty in Milton Keynes for families referred to the Food Cupboard by Children and Families Social Services. This year the Food Cupboard has seen an unprecedented rise in the number of families being referred for support as job losses continue to bite.
Now more than ever reaching out and lending a helping hand in our local community is a way that each young person at Webber can see their donations making a significant difference to other families, children and local people just like them.
