Reception

Reception provides a calm, nurturing and inspiring start to school life here at Webber. As the first year of Prep School, it builds on the foundations of early learning and ensures children feel confident, secure and excited about their education journey.

Learning in Reception follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), with a strong emphasis on play-based, hands-on experiences that spark curiosity and encourage independence. Children are supported to learn at their own pace, with carefully planned activities that develop both academic and personal skills.

A Strong Foundation for Learning

In Reception, children develop across the prime and specific areas of learning:

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Early Literacy and Phonics
  • Early Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

These areas are brought to life through engaging topics, structured play and meaningful experiences that help children make sense of the world around them.

Learning Through Exploration

Our Reception environment is designed to encourage exploration, creativity and confidence. Children learn through a balance of child-led and adult-guided activities, both indoors and outdoors. Key experiences include:

  • Phonics-based early reading and writing
  • Practical, hands-on maths activities
  • Outdoor learning and exploration
  • Creative arts, music and storytelling
  • Developing early social and communication skills

Every child is encouraged to be curious, independent and confident in their learning.

A Supportive Start to School Life

We place great importance on pastoral care and emotional wellbeing. Strong relationships between staff, pupils and families ensure every child feels known, valued and supported from day one.

By the end of Reception, children are well-prepared for the transition into Year 1 – confident in their abilities, secure in their routines and excited for the next stage of their learning journey.
