The Webber Independent welcome Alistair Patrick-Heselton, Paralympic Silver Medallist to deliver life skills workshop

08 March 2017

The Living for Sport initiative, delivered through Sky Sports and in partnership with Youth Sport Trust, is designed to help young people develop valuable skills that will help them in and outside of school.

The programme explores the six keys to success through interactive discussion and games; it focuses on building skills through using various learning techniques, and is delivered by mentors like Alistair that have had experience in sport and overcoming adversity.

The six keys to success are:

1.      Mental toughness

2.      Hunger to achieve

3.      People skills

4.      Sports and life knowledge

5.      Breaking barriers

6.      Planning for success

The interactive skills based training, which put the theory session into practice, demonstrated to our young people that through the use of problem-solving, communication and people skills they could achieve success of their shared goals. The interactive games challenged perceptions and taught our students to overcome frustrations and challenges.

Alistair Patrick-Heselton describes what it was like working with our students:

'I’m always enthusiastic to work with The Webber Independent, it’s a great school and the groups are very diverse and excellent to work with. I’m amazed at the difference in perspectives, but the students always come together to work towards one common goal.’

Speaking about the initiative, Mrs Hilary Marsden, Headmistress, said:

“Through working with powerful mentors like Mr Patrick-Heselton, it gives our students the opportunity to learn from those who have overcome considerable adversity.

The Living for Sport initiative is a great programme that inspires and enriches the learning experience of our young people. By complimenting the curriculum with activities that focus on life and employability skills, it gives our students the best chance of succeeding in their ambitions.”
