In Year 1 and 2 we have enjoyed getting creative at home and at school and learning all about Spring and Easter.
As the children have returned to school we have learned about Seasons and in particular focused on the season of Spring. We have spent time talking about the changes that occur and what we notice all around us during this season. The children discussed the blossom and buds beginning to appear on the bare branches of the trees and everyone has noticed the hundreds of daffodils and other colourful flowers that we have started to see grow over the past few weeks. We learned that Spring is the season of New Life which also links well to our upcoming Easter holiday and why Easter is such a special time of the year for Christians.
In our Art lessons we decided to create some Spring paintings but challenged ourselves to use a variety of different equipment and techniques instead of just using a paintbrush. The children started by using blue and green paint to create the background for their picture and used card to scrape the paint across the page - we also mixed some white paint in to be able to create different tints of the colours. We left our painting to dry and the next lesson we used pipe cleaners and lolly sticks to be able to create the stems of the flowers that we have seen around us. We then moved onto making our flowers and this time we experimented with using pom poms, cotton buds and our fingers to make different shaped and sized flower petals. The finished results were all unique and the children were impressed that they had built up such a colourful picture using lots of different materials.
We also decided to create a Spring collage on our classroom window with the children using sponges to create the spring scene - which you can see at the back of the school. In addition to the flowers, the children thought about the types of animals that represent new life during Spring and we added some new chicks and lambs onto our window painting too!
Following our theme of Easter and new life the children were given a challenge to Design an Egg competition for their Home Learning. We discussed some different ideas and the children were encouraged to think about creating a scene for their eggs to be in and think about the type of materials that they could use. We were incredibly impressed with the finished entries for the competition! We had Emoji Eggs, Sponge Bob Square Pants, Dinosaurs, Cinderella and Fairy themed gardens, some Superheroes and spring animals too! The competition in class was incredibly hard to judge and the children enjoyed seeing all of their friends designs too.
We wish all our families a very happy Easter holiday.
