RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch

01 February 2021

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is a registered charity passionate and dedicated to protecting and saving the variety of birds that we have in this country. It was first started in 1889 and has continued to change and adapt in order to research and protect birds. It is now the largest nature conservation charity in the country.

Every January the RSPB encourage adults and children to take part in their Big Garden Birdwatch. The RSPB have run this event for over 40 years and encourages families to spend an hour looking at and logging the different types of birds that land in their garden. These surveys completed by families across the country have helped to increase our understanding of the challenges currently faced by our wildlife.

The Big Garden Birdwatch was one of the first surveys to identify the decline of Song Thrushes in our gardens. From the data collected over time the RSPB were able to identify that between 1979 and 2019 the Song Thrush species had declined by 76% .

Sightings of House Sparrows also reduced over time however, from the bird watch results the RSPB noticed that over the past ten years House Sparrow numbers have increased by 10% showing important signs of recovery for this species of bird. These results help the charity to spot problems that bird wildlife may be facing. More importantly it is the first step towards improving the support and protection of bird species in this country.

This year's event took place between the 29th – 31st January. The Junior School were excited to take part in the survey and learn about the different types of birds we see around us at school and at home.

We always aim to make cross-curricular links from research using websites and non-fiction books, our pupils have enjoyed drawing different types of birds in Art and the Pre-Prep children made some bird feeders to hang around the playground and their gardens in order to encourage birds to come and visit.

The RSPB has a wonderful website with lots of information on how to identify birds, what they look like and how they sound, as well as tips on how to birdwatch and information about research and conservation that is taking place.

If you would like to take part in the RSPB survey, there is still time to submit your results. You can find out more by visiting:
