Our current History Topic in Year 4 is the Anglo Saxons. The children have been learning about how and when the Anglo Saxons invaded Britain and what types of settlements they built once they arrived. After discussing what humans need to survive and how to choose a good site for a settlement, children made a list of the features they wanted to include in their own village and designed a plan. The next step was to make a model of the village and to write a detailed description about it.
The children really enjoyed learning about life in an Anglo Saxon village, such as the different jobs that people would have been doing, what the houses were made of and how everyone in the village played an essential role in their community. After designing and making a model of their village, they were able to share why they included certain features with the rest of the class. We had some very inventive ways of presenting, including a video clip with audio commentary.
