Supporting Children New to Webber – A Day in Reception

Posted: 6th March 2026

Starting ‘ big school’ is one of the most exciting milestones in a child’s life, but it is also one of the biggest transitions a family will experience. At The Webber Independent School, we understand that many children joining our Reception class are completely new to the school community – arriving from different nurseries, settings, or sometimes even different countries.

Our role is simple but important: to ensure every child feels welcomed, confident and ready to thrive from their very first day.

Understanding the Transition to School

Across England, starting Reception can be a significant adjustment for many children. Recent national surveys suggest that around 37% of children begin Reception without being fully “school ready.” This may include challenges with independence, communication, or social interaction. Teachers also report that:

  • Around 28% of children struggle to eat and drink independently

  • 25% find language and communication difficult

  • Nearly one in four are not yet fully toilet trained

These statistics highlight something important: it is not just about children being ready for school – schools must also be ready for children. At Webber, our Reception environment is designed to support every child’s individual starting point, particularly those joining us from outside the school community.

Helping New Children Feel at Home

For pupils who are new to Webber, our focus is on creating a smooth, supportive transition. We prioritise three key areas: confidence, care, and connection.

Building Confidence from Day One: Small class sizes mean we can get to know each child quickly and build strong relationships from the start. Teachers provide gentle guidance and encouragement as children learn routines, form friendships and develop independence in the classroom. This personalised approach ensures every child feels seen, supported and valued as they settle into school life.

A Nurturing Environment for Learning: Our Reception classroom is carefully designed to feel welcoming, stimulating and safe. Children learn through a blend of structured teaching and imaginative play, allowing curiosity to lead the way. On any given day, the classroom might transform into a science laboratory, a shop, a storytelling theatre or even a space station. These experiences allow children to explore ideas, develop creativity and build confidence in their learning.

Supporting Families as Well as Children: We know that starting school is a journey for families as well as children. Clear communication, regular updates and strong relationships with parents ensure that families feel informed and supported throughout the transition. When home and school work together, children feel more secure – and that confidence quickly shows in their learning.

A Day in Reception

Although no two days are exactly the same, each day in Reception follows a thoughtful rhythm that balances learning, exploration and wellbeing.  Children build strong foundations in:

  • Phonics and early reading

  • Writing and communication

  • Mathematics and problem-solving

  • Social development and teamwork

Alongside core classroom learning, Reception pupils also enjoy specialist lessons and wider experiences including music, physical education, modern foreign languages and outdoor learning.

These opportunities allow children to discover their interests while developing independence, curiosity and resilience.

From First Day to Feeling Part of the Community

For children joining Webber from outside the school, our aim is simple: to help them feel part of the Webber family as quickly as possible.

Through strong pastoral care, personalised attention and opportunities to build friendships, children quickly gain the confidence they need to thrive.

Our Reception programme blends nurturing support with purposeful learning, helping children move naturally from play-based discovery into more structured academic development.

The Beginning of a Lifelong Learning Journey

Reception is far more than just the first year of school. It is where children begin to develop their confidence as learners, their curiosity about the world, and their sense of belonging within a community.

At Webber, we are proud to create an environment where children feel happy, safe and excited to come to school each day. Whether a child progresses from our nursery or joins us from another setting, our goal is the same: to ensure every child feels supported, valued and inspired to grow.

Because when children feel confident and happy, learning naturally follows. Find out more:
