A New Beginning: Supporting Your Child in Their First Days at School

Posted: 5th September 2025

The first week at a new school is a milestone moment for any family. For children, it’s a fresh adventure filled with possibility; for parents, it can stir up pride, hope and a fair bit of worry too. Here at The Webber, we understand how important those first days are, not just for your child, but for you as a parent.

One of the most helpful things you can do before the big day arrives is to gently establish routines. Children thrive on predictability, and simple steps like adjusting bedtime, setting out uniforms the night before, or even walking the school route together can make mornings calmer and less daunting. These little rituals send a message to your child that they’re prepared and supported, while also reducing the stress that naturally comes with change.

Familiarity is another wonderful comfort. Many children feel more settled when they’ve had the chance to explore their new surroundings beforehand. At Webber, we make it easy for families to visit, meet teachers and discover classrooms at their own pace. By doing so, the unknown becomes friendlier, and children step into their first week already recognising a few faces and spaces.

Of course, the emotional side of starting somewhere new is just as important as the practicalities. Your child may be buzzing with excitement one moment and suddenly anxious the next. Both feelings are completely normal. Taking time to listen, validate and share your own experiences of being the “new one” can help them see that they’re not alone. Quiet conversations – perhaps during the walk home or over dinner – can give them the space to express themselves without pressure.

Encouraging independence during this time is also key. Simple things like letting them pack their own school bag or dress themselves in the morning can do wonders for their confidence. And on a very practical note – label everything! backpacks, water bottles, jumpers – when every item looks the same in a busy classroom, labels save tears later on.

Communication with teachers in those early weeks builds trust and reassurance for everyone involved. A short introduction, or even just a friendly hello at drop-off, can open the door to a strong partnership. At Webber, we place great emphasis on this connection, keeping parents updated through regular teacher feedback, Parent App posts, and Parents’ Evenings throughout the year. You’ll always feel part of your child’s journey and our doors are always open.

And then, of course, there are friendships. For some children, bonds are formed quickly; for others, it takes more time. There’s no set pace, and that’s perfectly fine. Encouraging your child to join a lunchtime club or simply play alongside new classmates can help connections grow naturally, without adding pressure. In time, they will find their people.

The truth is, the first week at school isn’t about everything falling into place straight away. It’s about setting a tone of reassurance, patience and gentle encouragement. With each day, your child will become more confident in their routines, more comfortable in their environment, and more excited about what’s to come. At The Webber Independent School, we are here to make that journey as smooth and joyful as possible – for children and parents alike. We’d love to welcome you to experience this for yourself.
