Year 1 and 2 Aboriginal Stories

26 May 2021

Year 1 and 2 have been learning about traditional tales in their English lessons. This term we have enjoyed finding out about traditional tales from Australia. We started the topic by focusing on the Aboriginal people of Australia and how they use stories in their own culture. Many Aboriginal Australians refer to the world-creation time as the ‘Dreamtime’. Dreamtime is the foundation of Aboriginal religion and culture. It dates back thousands of years and tells the story of events that have happened, how the universe was created and how humans and animals were made.

Through reading a variety of stories the children learned that traditional Aboriginal tales often involve animals as the main characters, have been told for many years and passed on from generation to generation and usually have a moral or a message.

We have listened and watched a number of different stories that have helped us to learn about a variety of indigenous animals from Australia. Some of our favourites have been the kangaroo, koala, platypus, kookaburra, dingo, wombat and echidna. We have spent time in partners, groups and as a class to identify the villain and the hero in each story and talk about what the message of the story is. A number of the stories encourage the children to think about helping each other, sharing with their friends and not to be selfish or greedy. When reading the stories many of the children have been horrified by the actions of the characters and have allowed us to talk about why their actions and behaviour were not very kind to others.

The children enjoyed learning how to orally tell a story and relished being able to give other feedback on what they had liked about their oral storytelling but also importantly some examples of how they thought their performance could be improved. This helped the children to work on the expression and actions that they used to tell the story and also how they could use their voice clearly and capture the audience.

Aboriginal stories are often told through pictures and the class were able to use a story map to draw the pictures to help retell the story. They then used these as a guide for their own writing and also their own creation of a story.

We used our Art lessons and Home Learning to be able to read more stories, learn about the dot designs that are used in Aboriginal paintings and we were amazed by the pictures, paintings, 3D sculptures and sewing skills that the children used to complete the work on Australian animals.
