Sam has been on an extraordinary journey since graduating in 2016, spanning across elite sport, international study, and a fast-moving career that spans multiple industries.
Sam is currently playing professional American football, having carved a truly unique path that has made history. He is the first person ever to progress from university-level American football in the UK, to college football in the United States, and then into the professional game—a remarkable testament to his determination and drive. Alongside his sporting career, Sam also works in government consulting, specialising in technology projects with clients including the Cabinet Office and UK Research and Innovation. He also continues to work in professional sports timing across the UK and Europe, a role he first began while still at Webber.
While Sam’s career now spans multiple sectors, sport remains his central focus. A lifelong NFL fan, he supports the Denver Broncos, and recently began collaborating with DAZN, starting with coverage of the Super Bowl and now developing content around major international fixtures such as the NFL London Games. Sam describes this work as a natural blend of sport, media, and global storytelling, reflecting the growing demand for authentic voices in modern digital platforms
Sam attended Webber between 2009 and 2016, beginning in Year 7 and completing his studies in the Sixth Form. He reflects on a school experience that was instrumental in developing his independence and resilience. “Webber taught me how to work independently. When I arrived at university, I realised many students were waiting to be told what to do—I had already learned how to manage my own learning,” he shared.
Following Webber, Sam went on to study at Durham University, where he read Business Management, before continuing his academic journey in the United States. He completed a Master’s in Financial Mathematics at Vanderbilt University, followed by a further Master’s in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Southern California. Alongside his studies, he continued to compete in American football, progressing through professional opportunities including the Canadian Football League, NFL Europe, and later in Japan’s professional game.
Sam’s career has also included significant work in technology and events, including large-scale broadcast timing projects for organisations such as the BBC, as well as consulting work during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he supported digital transformation projects within public sector services. Reflecting on his journey, Sam highlights both the challenges and opportunities he has encountered. After initially being rejected by his first-choice university course, he chose to seek feedback directly—a decision he credits as pivotal in shaping his future direction. “If a door closes, don’t walk away—ask why, and find another way through,” he reflects.
Among his proudest achievements are signing professionally in Japan, competing across multiple international leagues, and balancing elite sport with high-level consulting work. He also credits his early experiences at Webber, including involvement with the McLaren Racing junior programme, as key to developing his ambition and discipline from a young age. Sam encourages current students to think globally and embrace opportunity wherever it arises, particularly beyond the UK. He emphasises the value of independence, curiosity, and resilience—qualities he believes were first nurtured at Webber and have underpinned everything he has achieved since.
